Over on Gadgetbox, I’ll admit that I’ve been kind of harsh towards the PlayStation 3. Sony’s next gen console has been beset by problems, including having its first run shipment limited to around 400,000 in North America, as well as taking a fair amount of flack for its high pricetag.
And now comes word that the PlayStation 3 and the iPod just don’t get along. Joystiq reports that unlike Microsoft, Sony hasn’t enabled any support for playing media from your iPod via their console. You can hook up the iPod via the PS3’s USB port, and even use it to transfer files, but it’s no better than the support for any other USB storage device. Contrast that to the 360, where Microsoft had a free download that would let you stream music. That’s right: despite Sony’s strange, occultish love of Apple, Microsoft has better iPod support than they do.
Then again, Sony’s PSP is often positioned as an iPod competitor, and it works just fine with the PS3 (surprise, surprise). Is this Sony trying to play the Apple integration game? Or perhaps when the Zune is officially released, we’ll see MS less interested in working with the iPod. Of course the real question is: were any of you about to purchase a PS3 anyway? And if so, does this make a difference to you?

Not for $500+. I'll just have to miss out on Final Fantasy XXXVI.
I am interested in the PS3, but was not going to make a purchase. Having support for the iPod was not going to matter one way or the other. As long as my iPods work with my macs, then I'm cool.
The fact that I can get both a 360 (which despite many claims is actually equal in horsepower to the PS3) and a Wii (very innovative with a lot of potential) for roughly the same price as one PS3 makes Sony's deal pretty lame in my eyes. iPod integration is one of the last things I'd consider in my purchase decision.
I'm interesting in Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy series, not that the iPod or PSP media players would matter in that. The main purpose for such a console is type of the games or titles. With the current price and without any big interested titles as MGS/FF i wouldn't purchase it any soon. Later, i guess.
I'm getting one. and I wasn't planning on hooking my ipod to it so it doesn't really matter.
and to be honest, this isn't really blog worthy. I don't think anyone cares or would even notice.
