Yesterday’s release of iTunes 7.5 brought with specialized support for a new iPod game, Phase. But what is said game? Today it’s materialized in iTunes (iTunes link) and it’s been revealed to be a rhythm game by the folks over at Harmonix, creator of Guitar Hero. From what I can tell, it looks pretty similar in concept to Guitar Hero, with dots progressing down a sort of “timeline,” prompting you to hit buttons in time with the music. The key difference here is that Phase actually uses your music (would that they incorporate that functionality into Guitar Hero or—please, lord—Rock Band).
Pretty nifty, though I’m somehow doubt it’ll have quite the same appeal as jamming on a plastic guitar controller while your friends ridicule you. Phase will run you $5 from the iTunes Store, like other gaming titles, and there are versions for the 3G iPod nano, 5G iPod with video, and the iPod classic. Sorry touch and iPhone users—while you do got music, apparently you ain’t got rhythm. So I suppose you could ask for anything more.
