WWDC ‘07: EA Games for your Mac

eagames_transparent.jpgOur own Dan Moren may have covered the keynote for the Worldwide Developers Conference live this morning but that doesn’t mean the East Coast sector has nothing to offer you. (Am I jealous that I’m not in San Francisco too? Why no, I’m not jealous at all. Whatever do you mean?)

Instead of the green-eyed monster though, I bring you tidings of great joy from today’s keynote: Electronic Arts will start releasing Mac versions of its games. Bing Gordon, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of EA, joined Steve Jobs (you might know him as Apple CEO) onstage to announce the happy union between kickin’ computers and fun games, including “four of [EA]’s biggest titles.” Starting next month, EA’s Command and Conquer 3, Battlefield 2142, Need for Speed Carbon, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be released for the Mac. Sports games Madden 08 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 will be available for the Mac in August, according to Gordon.

And it continues: after Gordon’s announcement, Jobs introduced id Software’s owner and Chief Technology Officer, John Carmack. No stranger to the keynote apparently, Carmack’s company created the popular Quake and Doom. He too, had news for attendees:

Carmack presented to the audience a demonstration of a heavily textured 3D environment built using id Software’s next generation technology, running on Mac OS X. Carmack told the crowd he’d just gotten it running on the Mac in the past few days, and encouraged attendees to look forward to other Mac-related announcements coming at QuakeCon, id Software’s annual gamers convention.
I haven’t been this excited about video (and computer) games since the purple-accented Super Nintendo console but now I’m even more jazzed for summer to arrive.

One might note that Quake and Doom were originally developed on the Next platform. I would think getting back to developing on a great OS might be exciting. Good times.
