The Wimp Predictions

Posted by Pat Nakajima | Thursday, January 04, 2007 2:47 PM PT

This will be the first of undoubtedly multiple posts about my predictions for Steve Jobs’ extra long keynote, henceforth referred to as the double-note. I figured I’d warm up by discussing some of safer assumptions, then once I get in gear, I’ll let the sparks fly to the point where the unwitting observer might even mistake me for an analyst. At that point, I’ll wash and wash and wash, muttering “Out, damn’d spot! out, I say!” all the while.

So where do we start? Obviously, the iTV is going to get some serious talk time, and I’ll be hanging on every word. It’ll finally give me some ammunition in my endless crusade to convince people that watching TV when it’s scheduled to air is just plain old-fashioned. Predicting the iTV is a bit like predicting snow in Alaska though, so let’s move on.

My second riskless hunch is that the true video iPod may make an appearance at Macworld. It’s been too long since we’ve heard about the ‘Pod proper, and I don’t know about you, but I’m getting antsy.

Finally, I think that OS X 10.5 has gotten a bit older, and it’s about time it shows a bit more skin. My thoughts on Leopard’s part in this year’s keynote are enough for a different post (and trust me, there will be).

In the meantime, what other nobrainers do you think will fill the time before The Turtlenecked Wonder brings out one more thing?

Turtlenecked Wonder? Brings out one more thing? Um... this is a family show, right?

iLife '07 and iWork '07 seem to be no-brainers. At least, I hope so. I want to get something out of waiting until after the show to get an iMac.

I know what I probably wont hear but wish I heard, the announcement of a smaller MacBook Pro.

Apple now has switched to Intel, thats great. Their product lineup runs the same software (and more) than other vendors, but their product lineup is different from other vendors who invest in smaller laptops. I want a 12" laptop. My MacBook is nice, but it is a little too large to replace my Thinkpad X40 and the on board video is slow.

What about more movies? No one is talking about it lately due to hardware hopes, but it seemed like some of the big studios didn't want to upset Wal-Mart before the big DVD Christmas rush.

Maybe more movies will be in the iTunes store?

And what about Blu-Ray...?

I know these are the "wimp" predictions, but more movies in the iTunes store would be incredibly underwhelming to me. Given the absolutely bare bones nature of movie releases, I can't ever imagine buying one. Maybe if they started offering the extras from the DVD's for download with the movie, I'd consider giving it a try assuming it was cheaper than the DVD. I would be excited if they did this AND offered a custom iDVD project with the movie that allowed you to recreate the DVD on your Mac and allowed you to burn copies, maybe limited to 5.

I don't think the iTV can be released before the other movie studios are on board.

I know most people don't think this is a no brainer, but I just really think it is prime time for a a mid-tower; Apple hasn't had a new design in awhile, a Mac can run many OS's and can play games now. Mid-tower, quad core chip, two hard drives, two pci express slots, ok, good, and game level graphics card options.

Search iWork '07 on amazon and see what you get, k?

No pictures, but it's in their database.
