The iPod video, revamped

05Ipod FamPerhaps the most anticipated new Apple product of today is the iPod video. While new may be a slight overstatement, there are certainly some features worth noting. Interestingly, the first thing that came to my mind after reading some of the new specs, was that these were features I remember people requesting from Apple several years ago. The requests have since died down (given up?), but Apple’s out today to bring them to fruition.

The revised iPod video now includes several exciting (depending on how you view today’s announcement) features:

  • A display which is 60% brighter.
  • New headphones which took 18 months to develop.
  • Increased battery life (from 2 hours of video playback to 3.5).
  • Gapless playback (a long requested feature).
  • Searchable songs via scroll wheel letter input.
  • Downloadable games (see below).

The iPod keeps its classy black and white colors but slashes prices, all while upping capacity. The 30GB model will cost $249 (same as the 8GB nano), while the new 80GB model will cost $349.

Any word on if the SW features of the new iPods will be available through an SW upgrade for the older 5G iPods?

I wonder if this will cannibalize sales - I can't see many people going for a black nano when for the same money you could get a proper iPod with over triple the storage and in the same colour.
