Apple takes online store down before today’s event

Posted by Scott McNulty | Tuesday, September 09, 2008 8:28 AM PT

storedown.jpgAs is tradition before any Apple event, the Apple Store is down (but, we’re reassured, it will be back soon). Rumors are swirling as to what we can expect from today’s media event that kicks off at 10 a.m. Pacific time (check back for live coverage a little later today).

It is clear from the invitation, and history, that this event will be music related. Will we see new iPods? Almost certainly. Will we see a new version of iTunes? That is a pretty safe bet.

But what else might Steve have in store for us? An iTunes subscription service? An update to the iPhone/iPod touch OS? Will the Beatles finally be available on iTunes? Only time, and Steve, will tell.

What are you hoping to see today? What feature is the iPod lacking that you hope it will lack no more in a couple of hours from now? Sound off in the comments.

I never "hope" to see anything at these events, I find that a silly expression. It makes us sound like a gaggle of schoolgirls waiting for the latest heartthrob to take the stage.

My thoughts on what might happen are based on the very high level of security for an event of this type and the fact that while there have been copious leaks, they are almost without exception about the relatively under-whelming iPod nano.

We have heard nothing about the new touch devices other than the one (most likely faked) wireframe drawing from iLounge.

This leads me to believe that the leaks are a dodge and that something big might be up in terms of a new product in the category of touch devices or possibly an Apple TV refresh or both.

Of course most predictions like this are laughably wrong at the end of the day no matter how smart or informed the predictor is. ;-)
