Apple fuels the hype; first Macworld banners appear

Macworld Expo 2008 bannerOr so say the first teaser banners displayed at Moscone South. Yes, folks, it’s that time of the year again. Ars Technica has a couple of pictures showing off the banners and they have a pretty short message for us to speculate on:

2008 There’s something in the air.

Cryptic, as usual. At the eve of the last Macworld Expo, Apple had posted a teaser message on their website homepage claiming that “the first thirty years were just the beginning”. Admittedly, these banners do not inspire that sense of giddiness and excitement that the black colored half Apple logo graphic did last year, but they do give us some food for thought.

What could Apple possibly be talking about here? Is it the predictable introduction of movie rentals or some new device or feature in an existing product that works over Wi-Fi or something entirely new and completely out of the blue? As we know our readers just love to speculate (yeah, all knowing and all powerful, that’s us), we thought we’d throw this out to you guys. Go wild. There’s something in the air, indeed.

Update: AppleInsider has posted a few more pictures from the venue to tide you over for the next three days. All you can do for the time being is gawk at them and dream up elaborate theories in your mind. So get to it already.

I hope this means a Mac tower that floats in the air!

Oh. Oh, I... just thought of something beautiful. I was thinking of all the reasons Steve would never, ever announce the "xMac" even if Apple did start making it, and it occurred to me that if you connect your monitor wirelessly, over the air, you have solved his major complaint about that sort of thing. Yes, it probably isn't going to happen, but don't judge me. Just leave me to imagine.

I'm imagining it. And it's nice.

Poor you. Waiting for Macworld must be torture, or at least it seems by the number of posts related to Macworld!

Well don't worry, you can be sure there's at least one other idiot going through the same thing. Thankfully you guys are posting titbits here and there just to keep the blood pressure within control :)

While I think it's too early for a 3G iPhone, the possibility must be acknowledged. Certainly, while last year's teaser makes sense in retrospect, this one does seem to have a specific meaning (then again, all those people that read into "The beat goes on"...)

Mac Powerbook Air will be the name of the new "light" product Air=light.

It will be a low power mac that doesn't require a cord and instead incorporates a wireless or cordless power adaptor similar to what www.powercastco.com has been developing. If not that then something like what wildcharge.com is making. Either way, the point is no more power cords. It'll be a first for the industry and while starting out with one "light" laptop, eventually it will be used throughout the mac line as the technlogy matures. You coulk walk within a few meters of the wireless power adaptor transmitter and have your laptop be charging or powered through the air without wires. Powercast demonstrated this in December at an event by lighting a lightbulb with nothing attached to it just through the air. This is what the future will be like. No power cords. Period. If it isn't introduced on Tuesday's Macworld, I can guarantee they're working on it. There's been rumors that Apple has licensed some of Powercast's technology. We'll see the results of that on Tuesday.

How about Apple and AT&T combining forces to provide complete nationwide wireless 802.11x service?

Almost every recent product announcement contains a wireless radio of some sort in it. They broke new ground with the iPhone and iTouch by collaborating with AT&T and Starbucks. Who's to say that iTunes anytime anywhere movie rental would be the starting point.

McDonalds liked the Starbucks idea so much they wanted to get involved too. Almost all their stores have WiFi already. A Big Mac to go with your .Mac

Ohhh the suspense!?!?
