“Six billion” is one of those numbers that you have trouble wrapping your head around because of its large, abstract nature (and the unpleasant reminders of elementary school math class). It’s also the estimated number of human inhabitants on this here Earth, according to the latest projections from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Of that 6,580,389,590 people, how many are using some flavor of Mac OS X? If you said, 7 BILLION, you’re a smart-aleck, but a commendable one. If you said 22 million, you either work for the Bank of America Securities, or dabble in the psychic arts. Yes, it seems that Mac OS X users represent a tiny percentage of the global population (0.3 percent), but let’s think about this: Are all 6,508,389,590 people using computers? (The correct answer is “no”). Also, although it may sound insignificant when compared to the behemoth that is six billion, “22 million” is nothing to sneeze at. When Leopard is released (ahem, Apple!), “22 million” could very well increase, particularly if Vista keeps getting kicked in the stomach.
And I think it’s only fair to note that Mr. “22 Million”, the smug figure, does not include the total number of Mac users in general. As in Mac OS 9; Mac OS 8; Mac OS 7, etc. (Hey, they could be out there, wandering the planet like Fox Mulder’s elusive truth). I, for one, would like to see them included in the party too, because as a wise Valley Girl once said, “The more the merrier, right?”
