Apple’s rejects seem to be pairing up. First Apple left PortalPlayer in favor of Samsung for the new aluminum iPod nano. While much of the microprocessor supply lines are hazy, it seems Apple has generally turned toward Samsung for the chips in the iPod. Meanwhile ATI has generally been favored in the graphics department (although NVIDIA certainly has had a presence, too—especially recently).
Well today it was announced that NVIDIA is buying PortalPlayer for $357 million. This could lead to a very interesting future in the iPod world. With these two teamed up, I wonder what possibilities may lie ahead for convergence? If we see a PortalPlayer processor paired with NVIDIA graphics, it might become an ideal chip for the true video iPod.
