Much as we don’t like to barrage you with iPhone news here (we leave that to our sister site, iPhone Central), there’s a drought on, so we can’t always be picky.
Besides, the fact that Apple managed to sell 1 million iPhone 3Gs in 3 days—a feat which took 74 days with the original iPhone and almost two years with the iPod—is big news, no matter how you slice it. Of course, the iPhone 3G is available in roughly twenty more countries than the original iPhone, which no doubt played a part, as did pent-up demand. It’s likely that the volume will decline a bit now, but it still seems as though Apple’s going to have little trouble meeting that self-imposed 10 million iPhones in 2008 milestone.
Perhaps the bigger news is the App Store—which we feel justified in covering, since it impacts iPod touch users as well—which itself did rollicking business, selling with over 10 million applications downloaded in its first weekend. That has the potential to be some serious dough.
With all the success of the App Store, we can’t wait until Apple decides to start filling in the gaps on its other platforms—Apple TV applications, anybody? Or even—dare I say it—Mac applications. Eh? Ehh?
Updated: Yes, yes, 10 million downloads ≠ 10 million sales.
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
Don't wanna be nitpicker, but the PR says 10M -downloaded- apps, not sold. I guess most of the downloads were free apps. Anyway, it's still a feat.
The buying experience was less than pleasant. I am not talking about the wait. I chronicled with a home video.
