Apple, a company who excels in creating good PR for itself, has done it yet again. Today, they released a statement revealing a new computer recycling program, complemented by updates on the (lack of) hazardous materials in their products and Energy Star efficiency requirements. The new recycling program gives customers who buy a new Mac free shipping and environmentally friendly disposal of their old computer. Additionally, all current iPod models (yes, that would include the video, nano, and shuffles) are compliant with Californian and European RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances) standards and exceed California’s Energy Star efficiency requirements.
For all these environmentally sound business practices, Apple was named a “Forward Green Leader” by the Sierra Club; this means it is one of the top 10 environmentally progressive companies. Although I would love to think that Apple does this truly for the earth alone, business just doesn’t work like that. Apple receives great press and recognition from consumers for making announcements like these. I suppose it’s also possible that Apple may make money from these recycled computers by extracting gold from them. I know it sounds pretty crazy, but there has been some discussion of this in the Macworld forums.
