Poison Apples

Toxic Laptop Testing Green Peace really doesn’t like Apple. Earlier this month they singled out Apple in their Guide to Greener Electronics (Warning: PDF link). Daniel Eran pretty handily trounced them for their misleading report. By that time, the damage had been done and they got a ton of free press out of the Mac community for it.

They’ve learned their lesson. And learned it well. Now they’re calling Apple laptops toxic and using the obligatory Apple pun: Poison Apples.

Poison Apples

Apple has recently launched its new range of MacBooks, but what you also get with a new MacBook is the highest level of another type of toxic flame retardant, tetrabromobisphenol A. Apple claims it is looking for alternatives but for now it appears to be using far more of this toxic chemical than its competitors.

Ok, time for the obligatory nitpicks. Apple recently launched its new range of MacBooks? The MacBook Pros were last revised 150 days ago and the MacBooks 128. That’s an eternity for the computing community. They call out the MacBook, but if you read the report, they tested the MacBook Pro. It has a lot more impact if you call out the right product.

As for the validity of the report itself, I’m waiting on Daniel Eran’s rebuttal, or at least independent analysis as the weak pun seriously makes me question their objectivity.

Even though Daniel Eran did make some valid points, the fact that Apple products contain dangerous materials is bad enough. True, the report may have come down a little hard on Apple, but I think that just because other compaines are producing products with dangerous materials in them does not make Apple blame free. All companies should stop this, and wouldn't it be great if Apple took the lead in this?
