In the back of many Mac fans’ minds lingers the same hope: There will be another keynote in the near future to talk about, you know, Macs. Steve will announce some of the awesome things supposedly to be rolled out in the next few months. Until that hypothetical event happens, here’s a look of what could’ve been yesterday, or in the eyes of many of us, what yesterday should’ve been:
Even though it seems that I got my biggest wishes (though the device’s use of widgets) for the iPhone, the lack of Mac in yesterday’s keynote neglected to grant wishes that I took for granted. Call me jaded, but I think it’s strange that during the keynote of an Expo that focuses on Macs, Apple released two PC compatible products. That fact, plus the fact that they dropped “Computer” from the name, almost shouts, “Go ahead, keep using your PC, we don’t really care.”
I want to know hear/know quad-core imacs and universaly binary versions of adobe products.
I'm really tired of hearing about the keynote that wasn't. It's like you guys have no idea how much work goes into a keynote. Steve didn't just hop on stage and start talking. All those demos had to be painstakingly planned to be sure they work, demonstrate as much as possible, and avoid boring the hell out of everyone. All these "iDisappointed" stories seem to suggest the iPhone should have been announced on Monday to clear the slate for a "real" keynote on Tuesday (how anticlimactic would that have been?). Should the iPhone announcement been delayed? Then everyone would complain that there was no iPhone (and FCC approval would be delayed). Apple's making an aggressive move into a new business, and everyone's complaining that they didn't get their new iDVD themes.
Dave,
Nobody is saying that the keynote was shoddily done. Some of us are just a bit disappointed at the fact that Macs were briefly referenced in the first 15 minutes of the presentation, then neglected for the rest. And you're probably a bit more likely to read that kind of criticism at a place like MacUser.
Stevo will come up with new versions of the software, sure. But their main attraction will be a multi-touch interface. iPhone runs Mac OS X, and I bet it's a cub Leopard.
Hold on to your seats, because I think we're gonna see something in the lines of this,
I think the fact that Apple made a seamless switch of processors across their whole product line in 2006 and that OSX Tiger is better than Vista with Leopard coming sometime this year is enough evidence to dismiss all this talk about Apple forgetting about the Mac. I mean, c'mon. It's one keynote...hold your damn horses, this will certainly be a big year for Mac. Now we're all even more rabid about updates and Steve has a habit of keeping us on the edge of our seats.
The iPod gave Apple the "street creed" it desperately needed to take the Mac mainstream. The iPhone is more of the same. You still need a Mac or PC to get the most out of either product. The Mac experience is still the better of the two.
iPod or iPhone, anything that puts an Apple logo'ed product in the hands of a PC user is still all about Macs.
Cisco sure got excited about Apple labeling it's new phone the iPhone.
Don't worry about lack of Mac announcements at the keynote.
Predictions:
Apple will make another "special announcement" about new product launches within 30 days of expo, and will continue to make announcements thorughout the year. They will be (in order of predictability):
Quad/octo core MacPros.
Wide-touchscreen iPod.
The existing Mac product line will have significant industrial design changes as the second generation of Intel Macs are announced. This follows the precedent of the PowerPC transition.
13" slim design MacBook Pro, concurrent with a 15" widescreen MacBook, priced approximately the same.
i understand the iPhone is something very important and apple put a lot of money into the project. i also understand the need of having a 1h:45min keynote to talk about it. but i also remember last year, steve jobs said: and this is all we're gonna talk about the iPod for today. after all, this is macworld, we should talk about macs.
then they had a special even just for the iPod. so i think the one more thing shoudl've been for the iPhone or just have had a special even to launch it. the thing is not out until june anyway, i don't see why it had to have taken the place of macs. yes, i'm annoyed.
