Stream ‘net radio on Apple TV

netradio1.jpgQuickie tip from our brethren at Mac OS X Hints: how to play Internet radio — like those found in the “Radio” list in iTunes — right on your Apple TV.

Simple process: Create playlist in iTunes; drag radio stations you want on Apple TV from Radio list into playlist; sync playlist with Apple TV; play playlist on Apple TV.

Voila. As long as your Apple TV is connected to the Internet, it will stream the music — no computer needed. You can even add web streams that aren’t in the iTunes Radio list by going to the Advanced menu, selecting Open Stream…, inserting the URL of the stream itself, then dragging that to your Apple TV playlist.

I just wanna know: does anyone actually listen to Internet radio? Anyone?

I actually listen to Internet radio quite a bit (usually ambient / electronic stations while I'm studying), and I think lots of people who have full time office jobs that let them listen to music look to net radio to find and listen to new stuff.

This is a really cool trick, since Apple TV will be connected to many people's home entertainment sound systems, which are usually better than their computer speakers.

Yup, listen to it everyday. The Technicolor Web of Sound - 60s Psychedelic Web Radio @ www.techwebsound.com (or via iTunes).

I listen to AccuRadio, which is less of a "radio" in the true sense than an internet broadcast of various genres of music. There are occasional commercials - usually brief - but no DJs or hosts, thus none of the antics and rancor associated with usual terrestrial radio (idiotic 'Morning Shows' and other banter). All music. There are considerable repeats of songs, however, on some 'channels' (i.e. "Hot Hits"), but this is hardly unlike terrestrial radio itself anyway.

I listen to internet radio quite a lot, and have done for the best part of a decade now, I guess. You can never find enough new and different awesomeness out there.

Back in my Windows days, it wasn't the fact that Netscape was dead that pulled me over to Internet Explorer. No, it was the integration of an internet radio toolbar right into IE5, I think, that pulled me away. I'm such a whore. :-D

Yes! Especially when you live in The Land of Clear Channel Radio. YYYAAAAWWWN! Internet radio is Godsend, my friend!

Does anyone actually listen to FM anymore?

Then they haven't tried http://www.radioio.com or http://www.live365.com.

I'm currently listening to the cool Mediterranean sounds of Cafe Cody at http://cafecody.com/

Local independent radio is dead for most of the US. If you're interested in learning about new music, I highly recommend the Internet feeds for two stations: www.kcrw.com (especially the program Morning Becomes Eclectic from 9 AM to Noon, California time), and www.wfuv.org from Fordham University. Both can be found on iTunes radio listings.

Are you nuts?!? I listen to Internet Radio more than FM, and with far greater satisfaction. FM these days is a wasteland that can't be redeemed by number of HD radio stations.

Check out Radio Paradise at

http://www.radioparadise.com

It's free but donations are always welcome. RP has been consistently mentioned in articles about Web Radio as one of the very best in the genre.

Also check out Hearts of Space at http://www.hos.com
for great ambient music. It offers one free one-hour show per week and very reasonable subscription packages, incl. access to its massive archive.

Actually, this tip doesn't work. The Apple TV can't find a feed...

Easy way to play internet radio (like Secret Agent on www.somafm.com) is to enable Airtunes and play from your Mac to the Apple TV.

David said:

Well, the tip worked once. I set up a playlist and synced it and I was able to play the streams from the Apple TV.

Then, something happened, and now when I access that playlist from the Apple TV it says 'There are no songs in this playlist'

:-( Sad Panda.
