I don’t know how we missed it from so long ago, but I had always thought booting Mac OS X or altering the software in an Apple TV required surgery (and by surgery, I mean opening up the case). That meant you voided your warranty and if something went wrong that had nothing to do with a software change, you were on your own. Witness the video below.
A specially modified external USB hard drive is all it takes to boot your Apple TV off OS X. Once you’ve done that, you can even alter the hard drive partitions that exist on the device to add all those plugins that extend the Apple TV in so many cool ways. A little more development and an automated way to do this later, I think I may need to pick up one of these Hackle TVs.
