Apple TV: Take Two (and don’t call me in the morning)

Posted by Dan Moren | Tuesday, February 12, 2008 11:51 AM PT

Apple TVWord on the virtual street is that the Apple TV Take Two update is now descending upon little silver boxes the nation over. The update was delayed at the end of last month, but Apple promised to deliver it within “another week or two,” and sure enough, they’ve just slipped in under the wire. You’ll need to go to the Software Update menu under Settings on your Apple TV to download.

While MacUser HQ is itself bereft of the set-top unit, we defer in this matter to our colleagues over at the Mothership.

Besides the entirely reworked interface, the big features of Apple TV Take Two are, of course, movie rentals (this’ll be our first look at HD content from iTunes), photostream support for Flickr (when it works, according to Steve) and .Mac, and being able to buy music and videos without having to resort to your computer.

Take Two has the chance to finally make the Apple TV the product it was intended to be all along; the one that really pushes digital movie consumption into the next stage of its existence (would that be the larval or pupal stage? I can never remember). We hope to have a more in depth look at what the update brings with it, but if you’ve gotten it installed on your box, hit us with your thoughts below.

Once you select to upgrade the software it asks to download it now or later. The update download took less than five minutes for me.

After selecting to Update Now you get the large Apple logo displayed and the Apple TV restarts several times. Roughly the third time it restarts you get a little update bar that shows the installation progression. It'll go through the process of filling itself twice, restart and then begin again and fill itself once more before restarting three times before it's complete. The installation itself only took ten minutes.

The introductory animation is spectacular! Afterwards, you get the gorgeous new menu and you're in business! :) Now go download, install, and enjoy!
