It fits in an envelope

stevesleeve1.jpgI pulled my MacBook Air out of my backpack.

“Ooh,” ogled a classmate. “Is that the one in the envelope in that commercial?”

Um, yeah. That’s the one.

That’s how I refer to it now. The laptop in the envelope.

Obviously the first thing that came to mind when Jobs first showed the commercial at Macworld was “Well, that’s going to be a laptop case.” And so it is: Timbuk2 has announced the Steve Sleeve, an Air “ultraglove” that looks surprisingly like…a manila envelope.

We’ve overbuilt the hell out of this sleeve including ultrasonic seam welds, durable exterior softshell fabric (just like the stuff in mountaineering jackets), and low pile brushed fleece lining. The exterior fabric and interior fleece are made from recycle-ready poly, the brushed aluminum buttons can be tossed in your recycling bin with your soda cans, the sonic welds use nontoxic glue, and the string can be reused to tie your shoe in a pinch.

Good, because I always lose a shoelace at the worst possible times.

No details about when it’s going to ship or how much it’ll cost, but you can sign up at the Steve Sleeve site to be notified when it’s ready to go.

Come on! How many more of these stupid things are we going to see? I mean really, are you going to actually put your $2000 laptop in something so easily dropped, forgotten, stolen or sat on? Not to mention ugly.
